Empowering Clean Cooking
Transforming Lives Through Clean Cooking Solutions
Explore how our platform connects stakeholders for effective clean cooking solutions and fosters sustainable practices.
What is Clean Cooking?
Clean cooking means using cooking solutions that are safe for people and the environment. Unlike Traditional cooking methods (using wood, charcoal, kerosene) produce harmful indoor air pollution, leading to respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and premature deaths, especially among women and children.
Clean cooking technologies (like electric stoves, induction cookstoves, biogas digesters) drastically reduce or eliminate these harmful emissions, leading to cleaner indoor air and better health for families.
Clean cooking means using cooking solutions that are safe for people and the environment. Unlike traditional stoves that burn firewood, charcoal, or dung, clean stoves reduce smoke, save energy, and prevent health risks. Clean cooking includes technologies like electric stoves, improved biomass stoves, and solar or biogas solutions.
Why Clean Cooking
Improved Health Outcomes
Each year, unsafe cooking practices expose millions of Ethiopians to harmful indoor smoke.
• 70,000+ people in Ethiopia die annually from household air pollution• Women and children are most affected
Health
risks include:
• Respiratory infections
• Eye conditions
• Burns and chronic illness
Clean cooking drastically reduces these risks, making kitchens safer and families healthier.
Environmental Protection
Reliance on firewood and charcoal is a major driver of:
• Deforestation
• Soil degradation
• Greenhouse gas emissions
Clean cooking technologies help reduce biomass demand, allowing forests to recover and supporting Ethiopia’s climate resilience and conservation goals.
Economic Benefits and Time Savings
Women and girls spend up to 4 hours daily collecting firewood, limiting time for school, work, or family.
Clean stoves reduce this burden, enabling:
• Time for income-generating activities
• Increased school attendance
• Improved household productivity
Energy Efficiency and Modernization
Modern clean cooking technologies are often more energy-efficient, using less fuel or electricity to achieve the same cooking results. Adopting these technologies aligns with national energy goals, promotes modernization, and helps countries transition towards sustainable energy systems
Enhanced Safety
Open fires and traditional stoves pose risks of burns and accidental fires in homes. Clean cooking appliances are generally safer to operate, reducing the risk of household accidents.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a “labeled” clean cooking product?
A labeled product is one that the Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authrority (PEA) has tested and certified for safety, energy efficiency, and low emissions.
Who is responsible for product labeling in Ethiopia?
The Petroleum and Energy Authority (PEA) oversees clean cooking product labeling.
Email: [email protected]
Phone: +251 900 115 459
Why should I choose a labeled stove over an unlabeled one?
Labeled products are safer and more durable, more energy-efficient, typically come with warranties and quality gurantees.
How can I verify if a product is certified or labeled?
By looking for official labels issued by PEA, physically verify the products. You can also ask the vendors for proof of certification.
Products listed on our products page, have a tag showing PEA labeled products.
What are the benefits of using a labeled clean cooking product?
- Helthier indoor air (less smoke)
- Lower fuel and energy expenses
- Improved safety and lifespan
- Reduced environmental impact
What types of clean cooking products are available?
There are several technologies available, including electric stoves (coil, radiant, induction), electric Injera Mitads, improved biomass stoves, solar cookers, and biogas digesters. You can explore our products page.
Is electric cooking reliable in Ethiopia given power outages?
While electricity reliability can be a concern in some areas, the Ethiopian Electric Utility is working to improve grid stability. The platform focuses on highlighting energy-efficient eCooking appliances and providing information on efficient usage. For areas with frequent outages, solar cookers or improved biomass stoves may serve as complementary options.
What are the steps to get a product labeled?
Products must be tested and certified by Petroleum and Energy Authority (PEA). If approved, your product receives an official efficiency rating label, which helps build consumer trust. To get a product labeled manufacturers must submit to the PEA:
- One sample unit of their product.
- Present a Valid, renewed Kebele ID.
- Complete and submit the PEA application form
How long does the labeling process take?
Electric Stoves take a minimum of one (1) week. Injera Mitads take a minimum of fifteen (15) working days.
Do I have to pay PEA for labeling my products?
No, labeling is free of charge
Do I need to reapply if I modify a labeled product?
Yes, any product modification requires retesting and relabeling by the PEA
Which types of products are currently eligible for labeling?
- Electric Stoves: Only open resistor-based electric models.
- Injera Mitads: Only clay plate resistor-based electric models
What are the technical labeling standards for these products?
For Electric Stoves:
- Electric-only, open resistor-based
- Rated voltage: Max 250V (single-phase)
- Clay plate diameter: 53 mm to 60 mm
- Clay plate, resistor-based electric stove
- Rated voltage: Max 250V (single-phase)
- Cooking zone diameter: 160 mm to 250 mm
What Standards should my clean cookstove meet?
Your product should comply with Ethiopian Standard ES 6085:2019, which outlines performance, safety, and environmental requirements.
